A History of Hervey Bay Orchid Society Inc.
In 1983 a notice was inserted in the Hervey Bay newspaper calling for expressions of interest in forming an Orchid Growers Group in Hervey Bay
Approximately 50 people attended and Noel Joyce, moved that the Hervey Bay Orchid Society be formed. Following the adoption of the motion the following executive committee was elected.
First President: Brian Pearce
First Vice President: Noel Joyce
First Secretary: Tom Parkin
First Treasurer: Joan Joyce
Many of the original members still retain their membership with the society. There are those who, over the years since inception, have worked tirelessly to show the citizens of Hervey Bay the joy to be had from this fascinating hobby .
Hervey Bay Orchid Society became incorporated in 1987.
As a society we have held an annual show in association with other clubs from Childers, Maryborough, Bundaberg and Gympie, much to the delight of those residents and visitors to Hervey Bay who availed themselves of the occasion. We have participated with those same clubs at their own annual shows.
Due to the hard work and dedication of the orchid growers of Hervey Bay our society continues to flourish for the enjoyment of the citizens.
Our Aims and AchievementsHervey Bay Orchid Society aims to promote, through good fellowship, the knowledge and advancement of all that pertains to orchids. This includes their natural history and hybridisation and the sharing of knowledge with each other.
To this end, the society holds monthly meeting at the homes of different members where non-members are invited to attend at no cost. It is at these Interested Growers Group meetings that those in attendance are able to seek advice from experienced growers on any problems they may have. It is also a chance for those who have a plant they are particularly proud of, to show it off and perhaps explain the method used to get the plant to grow so well.
Over the years, thousands of visitors have benefited from the knowledge gained at our Annual Show.
